Tune in Tuesday: The 90's Edition Vol 1

Tune in Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Ginger at GReads. It's a fun way to share your favorite music with other bloggers and hopefully introduce them to so truly kickin' tunes :)

Alright, this is quite possibly the hardest week for Tune in Tuesday yet. This time around we were given a theme and I definitely struggled. We were asked to focus on 90’s music… which I happen to love. I was born in 1990, so I have a ton of memories centered around 90’s music. I pretty much love it all – the pop, the rock, the alternative, the grunge… the 90’s were just so much fun. Needless to say, I have a HUGE selection of songs for you this week. Honestly, when I was making a list I had about 100 songs… so please understand how much I tried to narrow it down for you. I hope you enjoy your 90’s mix tape, courtesy of That Bookish Girl.  I hope we are doing this next week, that way I can make a B-Sides list!

1.       Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit (1991)
This song is the 90’s. I don’t know how anyone can talk about 90’s music and not immediately think of Smells Like Teen Spirit.  I enjoy a lot of Nirvana music, but this is kind of their crowning moment.  Oh, and p.s. has anyone heard the Tori Amos version of this?  It’s incredible! She takes it in a completely different direction and it’s just so hauntingly beautiful.

 2. Oasis – Wonderwall (1995)
I LOVE this song. It’s just so hypnotic and... beautiful. I still listen to this one all the time too. Have you heard the Ryan Adam’s cover of this one? It’s off of Love Is Hell I believe. I’m not 100% sure and unfortunately for you, I am too lazy to check.

3. The Wallflowers – One Headlight (1997)
I have listened to this song 1,000’s of times. I kid you not. I really can’t tell you why I love it so much, I just do. I especially love driving to it… while I scream it at the top of my lungs. But tell me this.. how did I just find out that is Jakob Dylan? Granted, I was 7 when this song came out, but still.. I love Jakob Dylan.

4. Jewel – Foolish Games (1995)
YEEESSSSS. To this day, my best friend and I continue to screech along to this on a regular basis. I try my best not to crack the windows of the car.

5. No Doubt – Don’t Speak (1995)
No Doubt is AMAZING. I love practically every song they put out, but Don’t Speak is one of my favorites. P.S. I want Gwen’s dress from the video.

6. Toadies – Possum Kingdom (1994)
It’s just such a good song. Who doesn’t love a good rape/murder story?

7. Lisa Loeb – Stay (1994)
Reality Bites, baby.

8. Meredith Brooks – Bitch (1997)
Oh, yes. This is kind of my anthem/shower song.

9. The New Radicals – You Get What You Give (1998)
This song just makes me so incredibly happy. How can you possibly listen to it and not smile?
10. Natalie Imbruglia - Torn (1997)
This is kind of my song :)

LOOOOOOOOve all of these songs. Especially Oasis. I was such a huge fan of theirs :-) and yes, this theme will be continuing for a few more weeks. There's no way we could pack it all in to one week!

Good gracious, I don't even know how to comment on all of these songs. I'll just keep it simple and stick with the first one so I don't write a novel. Nirvana was the beginning of an entire new genre of music. I was so fortunate to remember it SO WELL and I still love it. So many of the younger people these days hate that type of music, and I just don't understand why anyone would hate on 90's music or think it bad in any way. I remember what I was doing and wearing when I heard that Kurt Cobain had died, as well as Shannon Hoon, Layne Staley, Michael Hutchence, and some of the others. So the Nirvana stuff means a great deal to me. You could even say that I may have gotten married in due part to the Seattle grunge movement.

Man, I wish the New Radicals would have kept recording because they were awesome. And Lisa Loeb's stuff is STILL played constantly by me. Even her newer stuff is so great. All of these picks were good ones.
